A high percentage of Aboriginal women entering shelters and transition homes need to learn financial skills for self-reliance for themselves and their children. This project will develop and test a financial literacy toolkit and provide training to 2,100 Aboriginal women using shelters or transition housing services. The training will be offered to all Aboriginal women across Canada who are using shelters for protection against violence to help them with everyday financial decisions, prior to their return to their community. The tools developed will teach them to manage money so the primary needs of their family are fulfilled, understand credit and how to use it wisely, achieve financial goals, and build their credit rating. Lessons learned and best practices will be shared with Aboriginal women’s organizations in Canada, as well with women’s shelters with Aboriginal clients. |
