Governor General's Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case

BROCHURE

Because equality for women and girls is everybody's business

Women were officially declared “persons” under thelaw in 1929. That made it possible for women to serve in the Senate, and it paved the way for women's increased participation in public and political life.

The Governor General's Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case were created in 1979 to mark the 50th anniversary of the groundbreaking Persons Case, which changed the course of history for women in Canada.

A nomination helps to recognize the outstanding contributions Canadians continue to make to advance equality for women and girls.

Each year, five winners are chosen from across Canada. In 2012, two of those winners will be from the youth category (15-30 years old). This is in recognition ofthe world's first International Day of the Girl which will take place on October 11, 2012.
