Saint John, New Brunswick

Increasing Women's Involvement as Decision Makers in Community-based Organizations

San Ae, project participant, with her mentor, Mary Arsenault

A recently completed project in Saint John produced a promising new mentorship model for visible minority and newcomer women and girls. Working with mentors, participants from various ethno-cultural communities took their first steps toward becoming community decision makers and business leaders. PRUDE Inc. also established networks to enable the women to take advantage of ongoing opportunities. With the completion of the project, several of the original mentors have continued to provide advice and support. Citizenship and Immigration Canada has agreed to maintain the mentorship component of the project until 2016.

“As a visible minority woman and a newcomer to Canada, I wanted to get involved in my community but I did not know where to start. My mentor showed me what to do and helped me every step of the way..”
