Kelowna, BC - On behalf of the Honourable Helena Guergis, Minister of State (Status of Women), Mr. Ron Cannan, Member of Parliament for Kelowna-Lake Country, today announced Government of Canada support for a new project that will benefit the long-term economic security of low-income women and children in Kelowna.
The investment in the Governing Council of the Salvation Army in Canada's 36-month project, Female Lone Parent Family Breakthrough, will help to increase economic security, financial literacy skills and social connections among low-income female lone-parent families.
"When we empower women to improve their lives and the lives of their children, we all benefit in the long run," Minister of State Guergis said. "This project targets women facing a range of barriers to their own well-being and that of their families. It has the potential to inspire dramatic improvements in the lives of participants and in the larger community."
Funding for this project totalling $274,897 is allocated by the Government of Canada from the Women's Community Fund of Status of Women Canada. To qualify, projects must work to promote the full participation of women in the economic, social and democratic life of Canada.
"This project will significantly benefit vulnerable mothers and children in Kelowna. By assisting low-income single mothers with the myriad challenges of lone parenting, we are offering them a real chance for a better future," said Mr. Cannan.
"We are pleased to have the support of the Government of Canada for our promising new project, which will provide single mothers with the skills and knowledge to improve their own lives and the lives of their children," said Major Toni Cartmell of the Governing Council of the Salvation Army in Canada.
