Strong Women Mean a Strong Canada: Guergis

April 7, 2010

SHERBROOKE, QC - On behalf of the Honourable Helena Guergis, Minister of State (Status of Women), Ms. Sylvie Boucher, Parliamentary Secretary for Status of Women and Member of Parliament for Beauport – Limoilou, today announced Government of Canada support for two new projects that will benefit women in Sherbrooke and throughout the Eastern Townships region of Quebec.

"These projects target women facing traditional barriers to their participation, whether in local politics and on municipal boards or in the construction industry.," Minister of State Guergis said. "Both have the potential to inspire dramatic improvements in the lives of participants, their communities, local economies and the region as a whole."

The two organizations to receive funding are:

  • The Femmes et politique municipale de l'Estrie, which will receive $176,809 for its project, Ensemble, continuons! [Onward Together!]; and
  • The Centre d'intégration au marché de l'emploi, which will receive $90,000 for its project, Les femmes dans la construction: une voie d'avenir pour un secteur en effervescence [Women in Construction: Way of the Future for a Booming Industry].

"Both of these projects will optimize women's natural leadership qualities as well as their flexibility and adaptability to non-traditional work opportunities," said Ms. Boucher.

"We are pleased to have the support of the Government of Canada for our promising new project, which will enhance leadership skills among women in the small municipalities of the Eastern Townships, encourage defeated women candidates to remain in the political realm, and ensure a stronger voice for women in local government," said Ms. Annie Vincent, President of Femmes et politique municipale de l'Estrie.

"With this new funding from the Government of Canada, we will help to secure a lasting place for women as skilled workers in the construction industry, " said Ms. Christiane Carle, Executive Director of the Centre d'intégration au marché de l'emploi. "This is a project that will benefit women and families in the region and contribute to improving their economic situation."

Funding for these projects is allocated by the Government of Canada to the Women's Community Fund of Status of Women Canada. To qualify, projects must work to promote the full participation of women in the economic, social and democratic life of Canada.
