Minister Ambrose Visits Women in Downtown Eastside Vancouver

VANCOUVER,  B.C. – The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Minister for Status of Women, along with Member of Parliament John Weston (West Vancouver—Sunshine Coast—Sea to Sky Country), visited the Great Room of Linwood House Ministries, a safe place for women in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver.

"Women from all walks of life should have a safe place to share experiences, to learn about others, and most importantly, to learn about themselves," said Minister Ambrose. "I am truly humbled by the stories I've heard and by the incredible women I've met. Many of the women in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver have a sad history of violence, abuse and addiction and the services provided by places like the Great Room have a significant impact in helping these women to better their lives and to realize their dreams."

Minister Ambrose and Mr. Weston had the opportunity to tour the facility, located in the heart of the Downtown Eastside, and speak with women who work, volunteer and seek refuge in the safe haven of the Great Room. Women shared their stories of how the Great Room's services have helped to change their lives. Minister Ambrose encouraged Linwood House Ministries to contact the regional Status of Women Canada office to learn more about the support available through the Women's Program for innovative projects that work to promote the full participation of women in the economic, social and democratic life of Canada.  Status of Women Canada accepts and reviews applications to the Women's Community Fund on an ongoing basis, year-round.  

"I am proud of the excellent work Linwood House Ministries is doing in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside and on the Sunshine Coast, the riding I represent," said Mr. Weston. "The men and women behind the organization are courageous believers that faith, hope and hard work can overcome any adversity.  I applaud the Great Room's efforts in helping to make the world a better place."

"At Linwood House Ministries, we are committed to the healing and transformation of some of the most marginalized women in Canada, and to the healing and transformation of the promising community of the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver," said Ms. Gwen McVicker, President of Linwood House Ministries. "We were delighted to have Minister Ambrose and Mr. Weston visit and listen to the stories of the women who will help to bring hope and new life to their community."
