Government of Canada Supports Aboriginal Women in Newfoundland and Labrador

November 29, 2010

Stephenville, NL - The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, today announced Government of Canada support for a project to end violence against Aboriginal women in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"With the support of our government, Aboriginal women in Newfoundland and Labrador will be empowered to protect themselves by developing their leadership skills," said Minister Ambrose. "This important project will contribute to the reduction of violence against Aboriginal women and help strengthen their community."

The Newfoundland Aboriginal Women's Network will receive $262,386 for the 24-month project, Empowering Aboriginal Women; Influencing Community Wellness. Through more than 80 community workshops, 500 women will develop their capacities to engage in their communities and increase their leadership.

"We are very pleased to have the Government of Canada's support for this innovative new project, which will address the need for culturally based awareness and training around violence against Aboriginal women," said Sheila Robinson, President of the Newfoundland Aboriginal Women's Network. "In addition, culturally sensitive material developed throughout the project will be made available to other Aboriginal communities through a universal framework."

The Government of Canada is committed to supporting worthwhile projects like this because they yield concrete results for women and girls in Canada while strengthening our families, our communities and our country. Through Status of Women Canada, the government's support for community-based projects has nearly doubled since 2006-2007, growing from $10.8 million to $19 million, its highest level ever.
