Minister Ambrose Visits Salvation Army Project Helping Single Mothers in Vancouver

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women visited the Salvation Army Family and Social Services to tour their Vancouver location and learn about the progress of their on-going project assisting female lone parents.

"I am pleased that our government has provided necessary support for this important initiative," said Minister Ambrose. "Many women face a variety of obstacles as lone parents, and through our government's support, the Salvation Army has offered them the optimism, support and guidance that they need to help secure a brighter future for themselves and their families."

In March 2009, the Salvation Army received $235,845 for the multi-year project entitled Female Lone Parent Family Breakthrough. The project addresses the priority issue of economic security with an emphasis on financial literacy.  The initiative is scheduled to conclude on May 30, 2012.

Minister Ambrose toured the Salvation Army's Family and Social Services facility and had the opportunity to speak with those directly involved with the Female Lone Parent Family Breakthrough project.  Minister Ambrose learned of the many programs that are integral to this project and was delighted to meet some of the participants of the program.  

"The support we've received from the Government of Canada has been instrumental in executing this project," said Major Ken Ritson, Director of the Salvation Army Family and Social Services. "The project has been overwhelmingly successful, and we look forward to partnering with Status of Women Canada on future initiatives that strive to improve the quality of life for women and their families in Vancouver."

The Government of Canada is committed to supporting worthwhile projects like this because they yield concrete results for women and girls in Canada while strengthening our families, our communities and our country. Through Status of Women Canada, the government's support for community projects has nearly doubled since 2006-2007, growing from $10.8 million to $19 million, its highest level ever.
