ANTIGONISH, NS – On behalf of the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, the Honourable Peter McKay, Minister of National Defence and Member of Parliament for Central Nova, today announced Government of Canada support for a project that addresses violence against women and girls in rural Nova Scotia.
"Our government is committed to ending violence against women and girls of all ages across Canada," said Minister Ambrose. "Young rural women and men need to take action to protect themselves and their communities from all forms of gender-based violence, including those associated with the internet and new communications technology."
"Our government believes in empowering girls and young women," said Minister McKay. "By addressing new and emerging forms of violence against women, such as cyber-stalking and internet luring, this project will have a lasting effect on the well-being of individuals and whole communities in rural Nova Scotia."
The Antigonish Women's Resource Centre and Sexual Assault Services Association is receiving $199,914 for the 27-month project, Resisting Violence: Rural Women and Girls Take Action. This project will enable young rural women (and men) to actively address violence against women, and will engage six rural communities on the challenging issues of sexual violence, cyber-violence, internet luring and electronic transmission of sexually explicit images and message.
"We are very pleased to have the Government of Canada's support for this innovative project, which will prepare 45 young women from three counties to facilitate focus groups with 300 adolescent girls and boys," said Ms. Nancy Forestell, Co-Chair of the Board of Directors of the Antigonish Women's Resource Centre. "The results of the focus groups will assist in the development of community action plans and delivery of violence prevention campaigns."
The Government of Canada is committed to supporting worthwhile projects like this because they yield concrete results for women and girls in Canada while strengthening our families, our communities and our country. Through Status of Women Canada, the government's support for community-based projects has nearly doubled since 2006-2007, growing from $10.8 million to $19 million, its highest level ever.
