Toronto, Ontario - The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, today announced Government of Canada support for a new project that addresses violence against women and girls.
"As Minister for Status of Women, I am proud that our government continues to take strong action to ensure the safety and security of women and girls in communities across Canada," said Minister Ambrose. "We proudly support community groups that encourage women and girls to reach for their dreams, to take advantage of our country's many opportunities, and to participate as active and equal members of their communities."
The Urban Alliance on Race Relations will receive $240,300 for Making Noise Media and Accountability Project. The Government of Canada allocated funding for this project through the Women's Community Fund of Status of Women Canada. To qualify, projects must work to promote equality and the full participation of women in the economic, social and democratic life of Canada.
"We are very pleased to have the Government of Canada's support for this project, which, over the course of three years, will provide 120 young women from eight Toronto neighbourhoods with the tools to act as anti-violence leaders, mentors and peer facilitators," said Ms. Ashley Alexis McFarlane, Project Coordinator of the Urban Alliance on Race Relations. "In addition, a group of 30 young men and women will help launch a campaign against street harassment. The project will culminate in a two-day community accountability event."
The Government of Canada is committed to supporting worthwhile projects like this one because they yield concrete results for women and girls in Canada while strengthening our families, our communities and our country. Through Status of Women Canada, the government's support for community-based projects has nearly doubled since 2006-2007, growing from $10.8 million to $19 million - its highest level ever.
