Minister Ambrose Attends World Premiere of Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada's Ghost of Violence

February 15, 2011

OTTAWA - The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, attended the World Première of Ghosts of Violence, presented by the Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada at the National Arts Centre.

"This Atlantic Ballet performance is truly unique and groundbreaking, as it explores the important issue of violence against women," said Minister Ambrose. "I am proud that our government is supporting such a creative project that is helping to raise awareness about violence against women in Canada."

A unique pan-Canadian partnership involving the Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada, the Government of New Brunswick, the New-Brunswick Silent Witness Project and the Government of Canada provided support to the Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada to develop, produce and present Ghosts of Violence. The ballet presentation is part of the Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada's 30-month project called Reducing Domestic and Intimate Partner Violence through Art, Innovation and Community Collaboration, which will work with young people across Canada to develop strategies toward eliminating violence against women.

"Ghosts of Violence is an innovative collaboration of art and community - a project that seeks to play a role in ending violence against women," said Ms. Susan Chalmers-Gauvin, Chief Executive Officer, Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada. "We are delighted to present this inaugural performance at the National Arts Centre. Through its powerful and passionate exploration of domestic abuse, Ghosts of Violence will increase awareness about the critical issue of domestic and intimate partner violence against women, here and in communities across Canada."
