OTTAWA – Today, the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, highlighted the success of the innovative Blueprint Projects of the Women's Program of Status of Women Canada.
Eligible community-based organizations from across Canada will carry out the 65 selected projects.
"Our Government is committed to supporting grassroots projects that improve the lives of women and girls across Canada," said Minister Ambrose. "We're proud to work with community organizations across Canada to help end violence against women, improve their economic prosperity and promote women in leadership roles."
Status of Women Canada launched the Blueprint Projects to help organizations address priority areas.
These projects aim to achieve results in the three priority areas of Status of Women Canada: eliminating violence against women and girls; promoting women's access to leadership decision-making roles; and improving women's economic security and prosperity. Each project falls into one of the following themes:
"As Canadians, we believe in a peaceful, safe society that doesn't tolerate violence of any kind toward women," said Minister Ambrose. "That's why a number of our Blueprint Projects focus on preventing violence against women.
"For example, we're supporting a project to engage youth in preventing violence against girls and women through the Hamilton Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA Hamilton)," Minister Ambrose continued. "Partnering with the White Ribbon Campaign on this youth-led pilot project, YWCA Hamilton will share results and lessons learned with other organizations across Canada to enhance programs that engage young women and young men in violence prevention."
The response to the call for Blueprint Projects was impressive. More than 300 organizations submitted proposals for consideration, and of those, 65 projects were successful in receiving funding. In the coming weeks, Status of Women Canada officials will contact those organizations whose projects did not receive funding to further discuss their applications.
Government of Canada is committed to funding that strengthens our families, our communities and our country. Through Status of Women Canada alone, the government's support for community-based projects has nearly doubled since 2006-2007, growing from $10.8 million to $19 million – its highest level ever.
A backgrounder is attached, providing the list organizations receiving funding under the Blueprint Projects. For more information on Status of Women Canada and funding available under the Women's Program, please visit www.swc-cfc.gc.ca.
