June 21, 2011

Toronto - The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, today congratulated the recipients of the inaugural Great Canadian Woman Awards. The awards recognize some of Toronto's highest-achieving women leaders in the private and public sectors.

"I am pleased to join you all in recognizing three great Canadian women, each of whom is highly deserving of the Great Canadian Woman Award," Minister Ambrose said in her address to the gathering. "These are women who have contributed to their communities in unique and meaningful ways, and who have inspired us with their accomplishments and their determination."

Through these awards, three outstanding women of diverse backgrounds were recognized for excellence in leadership in their communities. The recipients are:

  • Ms. Neena Kanwar is founder and CEO of KMH Cardiology and Diagnostic Centres. Trained in nuclear medicine, she has provided leadership that has made KMH North America's leading provider of nuclear cardiology services. • The Honourable Justice Andromache Karakatsanis has a distinguished career in law and public service, attaining the highest provincial position, as judge of the Court of Appeal for Ontario. Called to the bar in 1982, she has also worked in private practice.
