Minister Ambrose Welcomes International Community to Women's Worlds 2011

July 3, 2011

GATINEAU, QC - The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, today addressed Women's Worlds 2011, an annual conference that brings together women from around the world.

"I am proud to be here on behalf of a government that is committed to bettering the lives of women and girls in communities across Canada and around the world," said Minister Ambrose. "I hope this conference will prove to be a productive forum for exchanging new ideas and approaches to help women worldwide."

Minister Ambrose praised the Women's Worlds 2011 youth component for their efforts to address the needs and concerns of younger women.

"We know that when girls understand their rights, they are more likely to exercise them -  to their benefit and to the benefit of their families and their communities. It was for this reason that I spearheaded the recent successful all-party House of Commons initiative for Canada to lead a United Nations Resolution proclaiming September 22 the International Day of the Girl."

Minister Ambrose also highlighted the vast number of projects aimed at preventing violence against Aboriginal women. Most recently, she announced a Government of Canada investment in the Girls Action Foundation's new project, which will empower young Aboriginal women with the leadership skills they require to end violence in their own lives and in their communities.

In October, Minister Ambrose announced a $10 million investment to bolster law enforcement, the justice system, victims' services and community safety for Aboriginal women and girls. Over the last two years, Status of Women Canada has committed over $4.2 million for projects to end violence against Aboriginal women.

Leading up to Women's Worlds 2011, Status of Women Canada provided support to allow diverse groups of women in Canada (Aboriginal, francophone, visible minority and northern) to identify common issues, share best practices, build partnerships and develop a conference participation plan that outlined how these issues could be addressed.
