GATINEAU, QC - The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, today announced Government of Canada support for a project that will fight violence against young women and girls.
"Our government is proud to support grassroots projects that promote healthy relationships and work to eliminate violence against women and girls,"said Minister Ambrose. "We will continue to protect the most vulnerable in society and to prevent crime in communities across Canada."
The Canadian Women's Foundation is receiving $558,800 for its 24-month project, Building the Field of Teen Healthy Relationship and Violence Prevention Programs which will engage young women and men and girls and boys, in violence prevention.
"This project builds on our 20 years of work promoting healthy relationships among young people," said Ms. Beverley Wybrow, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Women's Foundation. "This new project will bring together teenagers of both genders from across the country to encourage healthy relationships and to share ideas and insights about eliminating gender-based violence."
The Government of Canada is committed to supporting projects that yield concrete results for women and girls in Canada while strengthening families, communities and the country. Through Status of Women Canada, the government's support for community-based projects has nearly doubled since 2006-2007, growing from $10.8 million to close to $19 million, its highest level ever.
