Government of Canada Celebrates Women's History Month 2011 by Honouring Women in Canadian Miltary Forces

October 3, 2011

OTTAWA – Today, the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, accompanied by her colleagues the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, and Canadian military veterans, announced this year's Women's History Month theme, Women in Canadian Military Forces: A Proud Legacy. This theme celebrates women's contributions, now and throughout history, to the Canadian military forces.

"The Government of Canada salutes all the brave women in uniform who, throughout our history, have been there, fulfilling essential roles, working to uphold peace and security in Canada and across the world," said Minister Ambrose. "As Canadians everywhere celebrate Women's History Month, I encourage them to learn about the inspiring stories of the women heroes among us and those who have gone before us."

"As soldiers, sailors and airwomen, women have been there for Canada, on the front lines and behind the scenes, on foreign shores and here at home," said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence. "Canadians can be very proud of the tremendous contributions of women in every field of military endeavour."

"In times of war and in times of peace, we must always remember the sacrifices of all veterans, including the women who have served in Canadian military forces," said the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs. "Women's History Month gives us an ideal reason to learn about their accomplishments and to celebrate their contributions.

Canadians are encouraged to take an active role in celebrating Women's History Month. Activities will be taking place across the country, and Canadians can either attend these events or organize their own.

October is Women's History Month in Canada, which provides an opportunity for Canadian's to learn about the important contributions of women to Canada.

Ministers Ambrose, MacKay and Blaney gathered with servicewomen and veterans at the Canadian War Museum to launch Women's History Month 2011, being celebrated across Canada during the month of October.
