Government of Canada Supports Women's Participation as Leaders and Decision-Makers

OTTAWA, ON – The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, today announced Government of Canada support for a national project that is increasing women's involvement as decision-makers in community-based organizations.

"I am proud to announce our government's support for an important project that will strengthen the leadership of women and girls across Canada,"said Minister Ambrose. "Empowering women to take on leadership roles in our communities is important to the economic stability and success of our country."

The Canadian Association of Family Resource Programs (FRP Canada) is receiving $198,750 from the Women's Program of Status of Women Canada for its project to increase women's involvement as decision-makers in community-based organizations.

For more than 35 years, the Canadian Association of Family Resource Programs has worked to promote the well-being of families by empowering those who care for children and support families. This project will have a lasting impact in 20 communities across Canada, fostering women's leadership and civic participation, particularly among low-income, immigrant and Aboriginal women living in rural, remote or marginalized communities.

"Our project involves member organizations of the Canadian Association of Family Resource Programs from across the country. We select experienced women leaders from 10 organizations to be mentors, each bringing her proven track records in community engagement and civic participation," said Ms. Trish Plant, President of the Board, the Canadian Association of Family Resource Programs. "We match these skilled leaders with women from 10 other organizations, to build their capacity to take on the challenge and reward of leadership."

The Canadian Association of Family Resource Programs, also known as FRP Canada, supports family resource centres in large and small communities across Canada. These informal programs enhance child and family well-being by providing information and resources that encourage healthy child development and positive parenting, and by acting as friendly access points to more traditional community services.

Today's announcement is part of the innovative Blueprint Projects initiative launched by Status of Women Canada in February 2011. Blueprint Projects area series of projects that address one or more of Status of Women Canada's priority areas: ending violence against women and girls; improving women's and girls' economic security and prosperity; and encouraging women and girls in leadership and decision-making roles.

The Government of Canada is committed to supporting projects that yield concrete results for women and girls in Canada while strengthening families, communities and the country. Through Status of Women Canada, the government's support for community-based projects has nearly doubled since 2006-2007, from $10.8 million to close to $19 million, its highest level ever.
