Minister Ambrose Calls on all Canadians to Continue to Work to End Violence Against Women

December 9, 2011

OTTAWA – The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, has called on all Canadians to continue their actions and leadership in the efforts to end violence against women and girls as the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence draw to a close tomorrow.

"Let us reaffirm, today and everyday, our resolve to take immediate and long-lasting action to ensure a violence-free society by calling on all Canadians – women and men, girls and boys – to work collaboratively to end all forms of violence against women," said Minister Ambrose.

This year, Minister Ambrose marked the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women with the launch of a Call for Proposals to engage young people in the prevention of violence against women on post-secondary campuses across Canada. The purpose of this Call for Proposals is to solicit applications for funding of projects on campuses that promote equality and seek an end to gender-based violence.

The Government of Canada is committed to addressing the problem of violence against women and girls. Since 2007, Status of Women Canada has approved more than $39 million in projects designed to help end violence against women and girls across the country.

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence commence on November 25, with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and conclude on December 10 with Human Rights Day. The campaign observes other significant dates including December 6, Canada's National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women.

The Government of Canada is also committed to projects that improve women's economic security and prosperity, and advancing women in leadership and decision-making roles. The federal government's support for community-based projects has nearly doubled since 2006-2007, growing from $10.8 million to close to $19 million, its highest level ever.
