Minister Ambrose Joins Kanata Residents in Celebrating International Women's Week

March 7, 2012

KANATA, ON – The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, today joined local residents and Ottawa City Councillor Allan Hubley in celebrating International Women's Week (IWW), which takes place  from March 4th to 10th, and includes International Women's Day (IWD) on March 8th.

"The Government of Canada recognizes that women and girls, especially those living in rural and remote regions, are key to our country's prosperity," said Minister Ambrose. "That is why I am thrilled to be here today in Kanata to celebrate International Women's Week and the positive contribution of women and girls make in communities nationwide."

Each year during International Women's Week, Canadians celebrate and reflect on women's participation and leadership in Canada and around the world. This year, Canada's theme for International Women's Day and Week is Strong Women, Strong Canada – Women in Rural, Remote and Northern Communities: Key to Canada's Economic Prosperity.

"We are honoured to be joined today by Canada's Minister for Status of Women as we celebrate International Women's Week in Kanata," Councillor Hubley said. "Women and girls can be powerful voices of change within their families and their communities, especially as they become more involved in non-traditional sectors of our economy. This week, we honour them."

International Women's Day was marked for the first time in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution calling on member states to proclaim a day for women's rights and international peace. Around the world, this day celebrates women's achievements past, present and future.
