Government of Canada Supports Women in Western Nova Scotia

April 11, 2012

ANNAPOLIS ROTAL, NOVA SCOTIA- On behalf of the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, Greg Kerr, Member of Parliament for West Nova today announced Government of Canada support for women in Nova Scotia.

"Our Government is committed to bettering the lives of women and girls in communities across Canada," said Minister Ambrose. "That is why we're proud to support grassroots projects like this one that will help women in Western Nova Scotia increase their leadership skills."

"I am pleased that this Government of Canada funded project will support women working together at the grassroots level in western Nova Scotia, helping them become active participants and leaders in the community," said Mr. Kerr.

The Western Area Women's Coalition is receiving $113,168 from the Government of Canada for an 18-month project to provide mentorship to young women so they can take on leadership roles in their community.

This project will increase the leadership skills of senior and young women in a rural area of Nova Scotia. Through workshops, the women will be prepared to become active participants in their local decision-making bodies. An intergenerational mentoring model will be used to create links between young women and senior women for the benefit of their communities.

The Government of Canada is committed to supporting projects that yield concrete results for women and girls in Canada while strengthening families, communities and the country. Through Status of Women Canada, the government's support for community-based projects has nearly doubled since 2006-2007, from $10.8 million to close to $19 million, its highest level ever.
