Government of Canada Takes Action on Violence Against Women

July 24, 2012

PICKERING, ON – The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, today announced Government of Canada support for a project that will engage local youth in addressing violence against women and girls in their community.

"Our government is pleased to support this promising new project, which is engaging local youth to tackle violence against women and girls," said Minister Ambrose. "By forming alliances with young people from diverse cultural communities, we are empowering them as leaders and building support for widespread action to end violence."

The Women's Multicultural Resource and Counselling Centre of Durham is receiving a total of $150,000 in Government of Canada funding for their two-year project, Engaging Youth in Preventing Violence Against Women and Girls.

"We are very pleased to have the support of the federal government for our project, which takes a targeted approach to ending violence against women and girls," said Ms. Esther Enyolu, Executive Director of the Women's Multicultural Resource and Counselling Centre of Durham. "This new federal funding will enable us to work closely with local youth to make our communities safe for girls and women of all ages and from all backgrounds."

The Government of Canada is committed to supporting projects that yield concrete results for women and girls in Canada while strengthening families, communities and the country. Through Status of Women Canada, the government's support for community-based projects has nearly doubled since 2006-2007, from $10.8 million to close to $19 million, its highest level ever. Since 2007, more than $49 million in federal funding has been approved for projects that seek to address violence against women and girls.
