Thank you Janice (MacAuley, Executive Director, FRP Canada) for that kind introduction and thank you to the Canadian Association for Family Resource Programs for hosting us here today.

Honoured guests, ladies and gentlemen, today I am proud to announce our government's support for an important project that will strengthen the leadership of women and girls across Canada.

As Canada is not immune from the economic turbulence facing the global economy, we're focused on promoting economic growth.

Empowering women to be leaders in our communities is important to the  economic success of our country.

The project I am announcing today empowers women and girls to engage in their communities, and take on the challenge and rewards of leadership.

I am pleased to announce $198,750 our government's support to the Canadian Association of Family Resource Programs' (FRP Canada) project, which aims to increase women's involvement as decision-makers in community-based organizations.

This project will have a lasting impact in 20 communities across Canada, fostering women's leadership and civic participation, particularly among low-income, immigrant and Aboriginal women living in rural, remote or marginalized communities.

Through projects like this one, The Government of Canada is taking significant action to improve the lives of women and girls across Canada.

For more than 35 years, the Canadian Association of Family Resource Programs has promoted the well-being of families, providing them with expertise and resources to care for children.

The organization's vision is one we can all share:  A Canada that cares for its children, its families and its communities.

The Canadian Association of Family Resource Programs is making this inspiring vision a reality through its work in program development and via its support to member agencies and community organizations, which number over 500.

These groups offer comprehensive and innovative programming to hundreds of thousands of families across Canada.

The Government of Canada is continuing to work to improve the lives of women and girls in Canada – regardless of their background, their income level or the community in which they live.  I am proud of our government's efforts on behalf of women and girls.

This project can be added to the growing list of promising new initiatives helping to create positive, concrete change for women and girls in every region of Canada.

The Government of Canada is committed to funding projects that strengthen Canadian families and communities.

Through Status of Women Canada alone, the government's support for community-based projects has nearly doubled since 2006-2007, growing from $10.8 million to $19 million – its highest level ever.

On behalf of the Government of Canada, I congratulate the Canadian Association of Family Resource Programs for your extraordinary contributions.

Thank you.
