Thank you for that kind introduction.

Honoured guests, ladies and gentlemen, I am delighted to join you as we celebrate International Women's Day here in Canada and around the world.

Each year, this week provides Canadians with the chance to celebrate women's achievements, past, present and future.

I must tell you that I certainly saw Canada's future this morning as I began my day with 500 girls from the Toronto and District School Board at their 'Young Women on the Move' event.

We in fact had a dual celebration because we also officially announced that Canada will celebrate the first International Day of the Girl this fall on October 11th and the girls were quite excited about what that day will mean.

This year, Canada's theme for International Women's Day and Week is Strong Women, Strong Canada – Women in Rural, Remote and Northern Communities: Key to Canada's Economic Prosperity.

It reflects the reality that the Canadian economy benefits when women from each region of the country are economically secure.

Our Government remains focused on what matters to Canadians – jobs and economic growth.  We believe women are critical to our prosperity and to Canada's economic success story. 

Over the past several years, our government has also taken targeted actions to help women be safer, more secure and more economically successful.

It is because we believe women's safety goes hand-in-hand with their economic security.

Finally, in the spirit of International Women's Day, I would like to take a moment and compliment the tremendous work done by Women of Influence Inc. 

Through your speakers alone, from Olympians to authors, from bankers to broadcasters, and yes, even a few politicians, you present role models who exhibit the vital qualities of inspiration and leadership.  

I strongly believe that visionary and passionate women leaders can move our country and our economy forward, while inspiring girls at the same time.

On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish all of you a Happy International Women's Day and Week.
