Statement on behalf of The Honourable Rona Ambrose, P.C., M.P., Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, on the occasion of the launch of the Canadian Board Diversity Council's Annual Report Card

TORONTO, October 21, 2010 - It is with great regret that I am unable to join you for this evening's event.

However, I am pleased to take this opportunity to commend you on your work, and on the leadership being taken by the Canadian Board Diversity Council.

It is impressive that through your project, The Bottom Line: Gender Diversity at the Board Level, you are taking action to increase the number of women appointed to boards in Canada.

This is a project that received funding from my agency last year, through the Women's Program of Status of Women Canada.

I hope your efforts have an impact in every region of the country, and more women can have a seat at the table to support more economic growth and prosperity for Canada.

In the federal government, we have taken important steps to increase the number of women in leadership positions in the federal public service. In fact, nearly half of all Deputy Ministers today are women. But much like the private sector, we at the federal level are striving to ensure more is done.

As Minister for Status of Women, I am proud that our Government strongly believes women must have the same opportunities as men to participate in decision-making processes, and to prosper socially and economically.

There is still work to be done to enhance the role of women in all aspects of Canadian life, including government, the private sector and throughout civil society.

But initiatives like yours are helping to make a difference, which is why our government is proud to support you.

It is because of leaders like you that Canada is, and will continue to be, a great place to live, a place full of opportunity.

I wish you great success with your project.

The Honourable Rona Ambrose, P.C., M.P.
