FREDERICTON, October 29, 2010 - As Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, I am delighted to congratulate the Native Women's Association of Canada (NWAC) on receiving the 2010 Muriel McQueen Fergusson Foundation Award. This prestigious award recognizes outstanding individuals and organizations whose contributions help to prevent and eliminate family violence in Canada.
In recent years, NWAC's Sisters in Spirit initiative has created greater awareness among Canadians concerning the situation of Aboriginal women and girls facing violence. It has also helped to inform the public concerning the magnitude and complexity of factors underlying the women's disappearances and deaths. I am pleased the Government of Canada recently announced the next concrete steps in addressing the important issue of missing and murdered Aboriginal women.
I commend the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Foundation for its important work in funding research into the causes, incidence and treatment of family violence, and in promoting and sponsoring effective public education programs. Through our continuing work together, I believe we will create a safer, more peaceful and vibrant society for all Canadians.
