The firefighter could be the boy’s mother or a second father (step-father, same-sex relationship, etc.).

The percentage of female firefighters is still very small in our society. So we might assume that the firefighter is a man and the boy’s second/other father – due to a second marriage or a same-sex relationship – rather than a woman and the boy’s mother.
