Disclosure of Grant and Contribution Awards

Recipient Name: John Howard Society of London and District
Location: London, Ontario
Date: 2008-03-03
Value: $27,000.00
Type: Grant
Purpose: This 36 month project will allow isolated, Arab speaking, newcomer women to overcome cultural/linguistic barriers that prevent them from accessing mainstream violence against women support services. 25 women will attend weekly workshops addressing domestic violence, parenting, the Canadian justice system, and create a peer support system which will be maintained upon termination of the project. The content of the group sessions will be directed by the women themselves. Participants will complete a group evaluation every 3 months outlining how/if their needs are being met and what resources they need to make positive changes. Guest speakers from the London community will provide information on community resources. Women will be encouraged to attend language and employment training ultimately transferring the knowledge they have gained into action by leaving abusive situations, or at least accessing mainstream services. This project will allow women to receive support, information and the skills necessary to create positive change in their first language while providing a point of entry into mainstream services.
Comments: Multi-year project of 3 years (2008-2010).
