Disclosure of Grant and Contribution Awards

Recipient Name: Volunteer Ottawa
Location: Ottawa, Ontario
Date: 2008-03-03
Value: $77,670.00
Type: Grant
Purpose: This 18 month project has 3 distinct components designed to reduce the barriers preventing newcomer immigrant women from volunteering in Ottawa. Firstly, it will provide 50 immigrant women with volunteer experiences related to their chosen career areas. Participants will attend workshops which explain the importance of Canadian work experience, provide opportunities to practice an official language, reduce isolation and offer insight into the Canadian workplace. Participants will engage in a supported volunteer placement, use peer mentors or one to one supports to find and maintain a placement. Ultimately, newcomer women will learn transferable workplace skills. Secondly, this project will allow Volunteer Ottawa to assist local non profit organizations in creating accessible volunteer opportunities for new comer women and helping them to identify barriers within their own organization. Thirdly, a report outlining the barriers to volunteerism facing newcomer women and ways to reduce them will be created and disseminated to 300 non profit agencies. A best practice model will be created. An advisory council of newcomer women and settlement workers will meet 6 times throughout the project to develop recommendations and tools.
