Disclosure of Grant and Contribution Awards

Recipient Name: United Cultures of Canada Association
Location: Edmonton, Alberta
Date: 2008-03-03
Value: $266,585.00
Type: Grant
Purpose: This pilot project aims to provide South Asian women victims of family violence with the information and tools necessary to break the cycle of abuse in their lives and that of their children. This pilot project, based on the direct participation of women most affected by violence will aim to strengthen the victims response to family violence by enhancing: their understanding of cultural perspectives that impact dynamics of family violence by weakening victims' response, its impact on children, and the victims' role in its prevention; and, their knowledge of appropriate resources and skills to prevent it. To that end, a self-help guide created in English and translated into Punjabi will be distributed to at least 300 women, its direct beneficiaries, and 200 indirect beneficiaries: non-victim women, service providers and members of the wider communities. Service providers will be trained on the use of the manual and information and workshop sessions will be held for women in the South Asian community. The manual will also be given to women who come into contact with social services agencies and police because of family violence issues.
Comments: Multi-year project of 2 years (2009-2010).
