Disclosure of Grant and Contribution Awards

Recipient Name: Bureau de la communauté haïtienne de Montréal
Location: Montreal, Quebec
Date: 2009-03-19
Value: $52,738.00
Type: Grant
Purpose: The project aims to combat violence against girls and women in the Haitian community. Approximately 50 women from Quebec—including some of Haitian descent—will receive training to help them better understand the harm caused by violence against women and girls in their community. 25 women from this group will become spokespersons in their workplaces and places of worship, and 14 girls will become points of contact in their schools for their peers. In addition, 10 men from the Haitian community will be invited to facilitate formal and informal presentations in restaurants, barber shops and Haitian clubs to make men of all ages aware of the violence inflicted on women in their community. This knowledge transfer will be backed by a broad media awareness campaign through newspapers and radio. In an effort to optimize the project’s impact on young people, who are particularly keen on new information technologies, video spots on combatting violence against women will be posted on the Web site of the Bureau de la communauté haïtienne de Montréal. By providing information through three different media, the organization hopes to increase awareness among close to 3,000 individuals about the urgent need to adress this issue in the community.
