Purpose: This 24-month project aims to meet the unique needs of 450 South Asian immigrant women in the Edmonton area. It aims to empower immigrant women of South Asian origin to break free of the cycle of abuse by enhancing their skills and knowledge and by increasing their support by enhancing responses of service providers, cultural and wider communities. It intends to achieve this through four concurrent activities: (1) twelve leadership/skill building interactive workshops focusing on understanding good leadership behaviours, learning the difference between leadership and management, gaining insight into patterns, beliefs and rules, defining qualities and strengths, determining and polishing interpersonal skills and communication skills, decision making, empowering, motivating and inspiring others and leading by example, twelve network building support groups and self-defense training; (2) community leadership training to develop 40 leaders (20 women and 20 men) who will educate 1000 members of their community on issues of domestic violence and develop culturally appropriate strategies to respond to it; (3) broadening knowledge base of women and their supporters on issues of domestic violence through a periodic newsletter; and (4) raising awareness among service providers and women about some culture specific forms of domestic violence prevalent in South Asian communities such as dowry, women's abuse by in-laws and variations of forced marriage.
