|Purpose: ||This 36 month initiative will seek to reduce violence against women and girls by joining with the BC Lions to increase the understanding of the impact of mens violence against women. The project will focus on educating bystanders, and more specifically youth from grades 8 to 12, about what they can do to take a stand to prevent and stop violence against women. Although this project will target both genders, a particular emphasis will be put on engaging boys and men, including football coaches and their teams, with a view to promoting greater understanding that violence against women is not solely a womens issue but also an issue of concern to men.
The project will use a multi-prong approach to build awareness and positively impact behaviors including the development and delivery of up to 40 school-based interactive educational workshops about gender-based violence facilitated by BC Lions players, training presented to adult football coaches, a multimedia campaign featuring the BC Lions, the development and distribution of a film and viewers guide directed at youth. The strategies will culminate in a symposium where learnings, tools and other best practices will be shared with key stakeholders from across the province of British Columbia and with other jurisdictions. The project will be overseen by a womens advisory committee composed of women with past experience of violence and women with expertise on the issue of violence against women.
