Women in Municipal Government National Program – Getting to 30%

People in a meeting

Concerned about the scarcity of women in municipal politics, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) led a project to empower more women to run for office. Over two years, rural and urban participants alike learned how to: secure a nomination, finance a campaign, develop a platform, speak in public, negotiate with the media, and handle gender bias and other difficult issues. A protégée program allowed some participants to work alongside women already in politics. FCM also engaged with municipal councils across Canada and launched a “women in municipal government” strategy. The results are outstanding: almost 40% of workshop participants were elected!

“I loved being involved in this wonderful project! Not only did it help me make the decision to run for office, it actually helped me get elected! Thank you very much!”
