Purpose: This 30 month project will foster new relationships and support to African Nova Scotian women that will empower and enable them to move away from abusive relationships toward healthier and more independent situations. The project activities will focus on strategic consultations, mini-focus groups (“kitchen table talks”) and retreats with women affected by violence and living violent situations. Leaders within the 25 member groups (churches) in four districts of the region, as well as partnering organizations in the social, medical and justice systems will also be involved in this participatory project throughout its duration. The African United Baptist Association Women’s Institute will foster relationships, trust and a sense of empowerment for African Nova Scotian women as well as to work with culturally-related information resources to help targeted community organizations and government agencies to provide better support and social services to these women in Nova Scotia.
