Recipient Name: Latin American Women's Organization - MUJER
Location: Toronto, Ontario
Date: 2010-03-15
Value: $142,650.00
Type: Grant
Purpose: This 36-month project will work with 90 high risk, marginalized girls of Latin American descent in the Greater Toronto Area, who are facing violence in their lives. It aims to deal with the impact of violence and abuse in young girls aged 12 to 15 and to offer them the emotional and psychological support to deal with situations of abuse and violence. Through art therapy and creative expression, young women will be provided with the space and the tools to understand their trauma. They will also learn to overcome this trauma and to use their experience to become agents of change. The workshops will address the following topics: body image, self esteem, bullying, sexual assault, date rape, violence against women and strengthening ones’ self. The project will also reach out to parents and the community via community sessions and a media campaign to demystify these issues and to create larger networks of support. A specialized professional will provide one-on-one emotional and psychological support to the participants, as well as advisory support to the facilitators of the project.
