Purpose: This 18-month project will address the issue of violence against women, specifically the exclusion from their communities of women trying to escape family violence. The Shifting Burdens and Empowering Women project will reach out to Muslim and South Asian women in the Greater Toronto Area. One hundred and twenty-five women and girls will be provided with leadership and skills training through a series of 10 workshops addressing violence, the burdens put upon women, women's rights, community resources as well as developing public presentations skills. At the project’s mid-term, the participants will organize four community presentations where they will address the issue of violence, the burdens on women who are victims of domestic abuse and community responsibility. The participants will also organize two public forums on community accountability for issues of violence and exclusion. Reh’ma Community Services will continue to collaborate with the White Ribbon Campaign, an organization of men and boys dedicated to ending violence against women.
