Purpose: This project will address the priority issue of encouraging women and girls in leadership and decision-making roles. 20 urban aboriginal women and girls will attend 12 workshops designed to increase their knowledge of violence against women support services and to formulate a self governing “code of conduct” that promotes independence and self respect. Participants will be encouraged to build support systems with each other, community members and service providers. Women who complete the project will be equipped to act as leaders, gaining the respect of their communities through cultural performances. Participants will host a “Coming out Ceremony” where they will enter the community in their new role as leaders.
