Purpose: The goal of this 24-month project is to contribute to reducing violence against women and girls. It aims to empower immigrant women and girls of South Asian and Middle Eastern descent in Edmonton by educating and training them on the issue of harmful cultural practices. This goal will be achieved through activities such as: community meetings; focus groups for parents and youth; four sessions of leadership training and peer counselling skills; and three educational sessions for settlement counsellors, social workers and teachers. The project will also work to develop strategies aimed at engaging community organizations, the legal community, and law enforcement agencies to better respond to the issue. Participants will have increased knowledge and skills to better identify and respond to the issue of harmful cultural practices. A related pamphlet will be produced and distributed.
