Purpose: This 36-month project aims to decrease the rate of criminalization of immigrant and refugee women who seek protection from violence in Ontario. Working with key partners, the organization will conduct a literature review focusing on research and relevant local and international case law in order to identify the forms of criminalization women reporting violence experience, such as domestic violence charges and immigration fraud, and the main drivers behind them. They will then pilot and advance promising practices (legal, procedural and attitudinal) with service providers, the judicial system, and the provincial government to reverse the identified trends toward penalizing immigrant and refugee women seeking protection from violence.
