Purpose: This 18-month pilot project will train and empower 260 Aboriginal women to become leaders and key agents in violence prevention and response programs to meet their communities’ needs. The women will receive training in project management, program facilitation, public speaking and evaluation methods. The women will then conduct First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada’s successful Caring Across Boundaries workshops and work with voluntary sector organizations (VSOs) to increase the range of culturally appropriate programs in four First Nations communities (two urban off-reserve and two rural on-reserve). At the end of the project, Aboriginal women living on reserve will have the resources and networks to develop their own on-reserve voluntary sector organizations. Women living off-reserve will continue to collaborate with mainstream VSOs to enhance existing services to reflect Aboriginal cultures and practices. The project will be a model to share with Aboriginal communities across Canada, supporting the creation of positions with Aboriginal expertise requirements, cultural awareness and women’s empowerment. As the first step, the evaluation framework will be developed and implemented to monitor progress and results.
